Employee Spotlight
At Building Connections Academy, our team is filled with some pretty amazing humans, and we love showing them off! This month, we’re excited to shine the spotlight on our school secretaries, Victoria and Abby. The two of these ladies bring curiosity, creativity, and a huge heart to our school every day.
We sat down with each of them to get to know them a little better… and here’s what they had to say!
Meet Victoria & Abby!
Victoria – BCA Martinez
If you could teach any subject (real or imaginary), what would it be?
“Somewhere between sociology and psychology! I love exploring how people’s thoughts, feelings, and choices shape the world — and how the world shapes us right back. I think understanding that cycle is a powerful way to build empathy and connection.”(Also… magic and potions class sounds pretty cool too! 🪄)
What were you like in elementary school?
“I was super shy but always trying my best to be outgoing and make friends. I loved making lists, doing math (I even made up pretend birthday party budgets!), and drawing little comics with my friends. If you asked my teachers, they’d say my best learning happened when I looked the most checked out — head down, doodling, totally focused.”
Favorite snack to get through a busy day?
“Fruit! Fresh, freeze-dried, or blended into a smoothie — mango, passion fruit, strawberry, pineapple — you name it, I love it. And hey, a little piece of chocolate never hurt either!”
Favorite way to spend a Sunday?
“Sundays are my reset days. Sleep in, make a fun latte or matcha, cook up a big breakfast, tackle some chores, and wind down with a cozy dinner and hobbies like building Legos or painting. A nap might sneak in there too! Sundays and I are definitely besties.”
What’s something you love doing outside of school?
“Anything food-related! I love trying new restaurants, cooking, and sharing meals with people I care about. I also love road trips, beach days, roller coasters, classic car shows — and lately, hanging out with my new kittens!”
What’s the best part of working with neurodivergent learners?
“It keeps me thinking outside the box! Every student is so unique, and it’s amazing to watch their confidence grow with the right support. It’s just as rewarding to work with an incredible team that celebrates every student’s journey — and keeps learning and growing alongside them.”
Abby – BCA Concord
If you could teach any subject (real or imaginary), what would it be?
“Art, for sure! I’ve always appreciated my art and recreational teachers growing up. They combined creativity with daily assignments and really encouraged me — it helped me carry that love for art into every part of my life.”
What was your dream job when you were a kid?
“I wanted to be an animator! I grew up watching Disney, but I was even more fascinated by the behind-the-scenes — the old-school animators flipping through pages to create movies. It showed me that even the tiniest steps can lead to something really big!”
If you could have any superpower in the classroom, what would it be?
“Teleportation! I’d literally be there in a flash — and I’d save a ton on gas!”
Favorite way to spend a Sunday?
“Having a lazy day with my husband. We either binge-watch shows on our list or dive into our hobbies. It’s the perfect recharge before the week starts.”
What’s something you love doing when you’re not at school?
“Anything artsy! I love crafting — crocheting cozy garments in the winter, painting in the summer, and drawing all year long, whether it’s on a tablet or good old paper and pencil.”
What’s the best part of working with neurodivergent learners?
“Learning alongside them. Every day brings something new and meaningful!”
Abby and Victoria reminds us that creativity, patience, and a little bit of magic go a long way — both in the classroom and beyond. We’re so lucky to have them as part of our BCA family!
Stay tuned for more staff spotlights coming soon — we can’t wait to introduce you to more of the wonderful people who make Building Connections Academy such a special place!
